Today is Fibromyalgia Awareness Day.
SO today, I wanted to take the opportunity to write to you, my near and dear ones and share with you what exactly is the matter with me. And even though you may know much about it already by now, please do indulge me and read through once,:-). There are many people out there who suffer through FM, who don’t know what they have and who are told that it is all in their head. But though FM is INVISIBLE, it is very much REAL. I know how it feels essentially to be told to suck it up, because although I had these symptoms since my surgery, it was only the year before that I was formally diagnosed.

Here is the information on FIBROMYALGIA:

WHAT is Fibro?
Fibro = muscular or related to fibrous tissue(also tendons and ligaments) and myalgia = pain in muscle

So FM is a condition that causes widespread pain, tenderness,fatigue and sleep disorders.
1)Widespread pain and tenderness(sensitive to touch)- there are tender points all over the body and also trigger points which can cause radiating pain. This means Muscles are stressed at one point but pain is also felt at another area associated with the muscle. The pain and tenderness tend to come and go and move around in the body.
2)There is muscle weakness and fatigue

3)Sleep disorders. People with FM do not get restorative sleep that can help the body heal and repair itself. It also causes insomnia, there is lack of deep sleep. Hence one wakes up feeling tired even after a night of sleep.

CAUSE of Fibro?
Unknown..viral infection, trauma to the body?(in my case , the spinal surgery)

Fibromyalgia is a SYNDROME which means it has a collection of different symptoms. It is NOT a disease, but a CONDITION.
SYMPTOMS:
The common symptoms of FM and , which I have are:
1) Widespread pain and tenderness, and muscle twitches, muscles “knots”, “electric” signals down the leg, and pins and needles or shooting or hot pain.
There is an increased sensitivity to pain as the nerves are always fired up. A chemical substance called Substance P , which relays pain signals to the brain, is found in abundance in people with FM which leads to amplified pain responses.

2) Morning stiffness
Muscles are very stiff, and stretching is very important to function properly
3)Migraine and tension headaches
4)Irritable bowel syndrome
Stomach upsets..cramping, pain, bloating, diarrhea,acid reflux, nausea
5)TMJ–temperomandibular disorder—jaws stiff and hurt if mouth opened wide, pain in ear, and ringing in ear

6)Cognitive problems–cannot remember well, going blank, cannot think clearly
7)hypersensivity to light, sound, social stimuli, weather changes, cold and heat. Raynaud’s syndrome(tips of hands, feets, nose and ear get very cold and numb and are very painful, in cold temperatures)
8)Anxiety and palpitation, panic attacks, sweating
9)painful periods
10)mood swings, depression
11)General body ache and malaise, like having the flu–mostly everyday!
12)Feeling EXTREMELY uncomfortable/stiff/sore being in one position for long
